Abstract: Dreiser's Sister Carrie is a successful woman. She has a distinctive personality development track: from being a country girl living on one man in the big city to becoming a “new woman” who was finally self-reliant and economic independent. In the novel, Carrie was given subjective personalities, and became the representative image of the “new women”. Sister Carrie’s growth processes and psychological changes embody the gradual awakening of her self-consciousness. This thesis tends to analyze Sister Carrie’s three thought stages: the seeds of the women’s self-consciousness in the period which lasts from living in her sister’s home and failing in her first job to her second job-seeking, the development of the women’s self-consciousness in the period which lasts from depending on Drouet to her third job-seeking, and the maturity of the women’s self-consciousness in the period lasting from living with Hustwood to devoting to playing. It reveals that new women should independent and struggle for themselves.

摘要：德莱塞塑造的嘉莉妹妹是一位成功的女性。 她有着鲜明成长轨迹: 从一个听任男人摆布的乡下女孩到一名经济、思想独立的新女性。嘉丽的成长历程和心理变化体现了嘉丽妹妹女性主义意识的逐步觉醒。本文从嘉莉妹妹的三个思想阶段着手进行阐述：在从寄居姐姐家第一次求职失败到第二次求职的过程中其女性意识的萌芽，在从依附于杜洛艾到第三次求职未果的过程中其女性意识的发展，在从与赫斯沃私奔到投身演艺事业的过程中其女性意识的成熟，揭示新时期的女性应该自我独立，不断努力奋斗。
