Abstract:The exchange between English and Chinese has a long history, and they both borrowed numerous words along with the long-term language contact. Chinese loan words are one of the origins in the course of English vocabulary enrichment. First of all, this paper briefly reviews previous study of Chinese loan words in English. Later, this paper illustrates the definition of loan words, factors contributing to loan words and different borrowing ways of the Chinese loan words in English, such as transliteration, literal translation, replacement, compounding. Finally, the author summarizes the tendency of development of Chinese loan words.
