Abstract: English proverb is the comprehensive embodiment of English native culture. Its short and refined sentences and the use of slangs have a great influence on translation. Besides the conversion of language, the communication of cultural connotation poses a challenge to proverb translation. The essence of English proverb translation is to make sure that readers can clearly understand the meaning of proverbs. Thus it is supposed that domestication and foreignization used in translation will satisfy different reading groups. This essay analyses the make-up of proverbs, taking foreignization and domestication as theoretical base, explores their application in translation in the hope of finding the more suitable strategies according to different situations.
