Abstract

In 1980s, as a combination of translation studies and feminism, Feminist Translation Theory came into being. It aimed at removing the discrimination against female in traditional translation studies and translation practice, resisting the absolute authority of the male and the original both in society and literature, and redefining the relationship between the original and the translated version. Jane Austen, who was a torchbearer of feminism of that time, created the image of heroine Elizabeth successfully in her work Pride and Prejudice who had the spirit of rebellion and pursued independent personality as well as equal rights. Jane Austen expressed her viewpoint on marriage in this work that marriage should be based on material and regard love as blood and flesh.

The paper makes a comparison between the two Chinese versions of Pride and Prejudice from Feminist Translation Theory. One was translated by Zhang Ling and her husband Zhang Yang, and the other was translated by Sun Zhili. The writer makes the comparison from three aspects—language performance, aesthetic standard and translation style to discuss the embodiment of feminism in literary translation.
