Abstract:Public signs are closely related with people’s daily life. Besides offering convenience to foreign visitors, bilingual public signs of Chinese and English are also an important aspect of international communication. They have great significance on China’s cultural exchanges and economic cooperation with other countries. In china, although public signs have long been used for directing, warning, explaining in public places, the study of the Chinese-English translation started rather late, lacking systematization and standardization. However, the importance of accurate Chinese-English translation of public signs has not been realized by the society. 

　　　This thesis presents the definition, classification, functions and stylistic features of public signs, and introduces the functionalist tranlation theory. On the basis of the theory, the author tentatively proposes four principles for public signs translation, namely, conciseness, consistency comprehensibility and Tone equivalence. By citing many typical examples proves that these four principles bear certain theoretical significance as well as guiding values for the C-E translation of public signs.

摘要:汉英公示语的英译是我国对外宣传的窗口，其英译效果对于提升我国的国际形象，促进我国的对外交往和经济合作具有十分重要的意义。在我国，尽管长期以来公共标语一直在公共场合起着指导，警告和解释的作用，但我们不得不承认关于标语的英汉翻译起步很晚，而且缺乏系统化和标准化。然而人们并没有意识到公示标语进行准确翻译的重要性。本文介绍了公示语的定义、分类及文本特点，对功能翻译理论进行了介绍以及功能翻译理论在公示语翻译方面的启示和贡献。最后在此理论的基础上, 尝试性提出了公示语英译四原则：简洁、统一、易懂、语气对应，并通过选取大量典型译例来证明这四条原则对公示语汉英翻译具有一定的指导作用。
