Abstract

As part essence of traditional Chinese culture, Xiehouyu is created out of our ancestors’ rich life experience. It is loaded with profound national characteristics, and is a unique form of demonstrating Chinese culture. Xiehouyu is concrete in images, abundant in content, and humorous in meaning, which typically uses puns, metaphors and other rhetorical devices, in order to strengthen the effects of language expression. It is applied not only to all aspects of daily life, but also in the creation of literary works. Xiehouyu is a treasure of Chinese traditional culture. Along with the strengthening trend of economic globalization, the world economy has increasingly become an interconnected whole, which leads to deepening exchanges between different cultures. Xiehouyu belongs to Chinese, also the world. Therefore, the study of Xiehouyu translation, not only can help the world learn about Chinese culture, learn our nation, and effectively spread Chinese culture, but also enhance exchanges and cooperation between China and other countries. 

In this paper, the author probes into discussing translation of Chinese Xiehouyu based on functional equivalence theory. By thoroughly and systematically discussing functional equivalence theory and comparing a great number of translated version of Chinese Xiehouyu, the author finds that functional equivalence theory is really useful to guide the translation of Chinese Xiehouyu. In addition, the thesis also puts forward some specific and acceptable strategies and methods of Xiehouyu translation.
