Abstract：Faulkner's short story, A Rose for Emily, reflects the impact of the conflict between traditional values and modern values as well as the declination of southern aristocrats on American society after Civil War. The tragedy of Emily, who was the leading character, results in readers' consideration on the relationship between individual and society.

　　　By analyzing the courses of Emily's legal socialization, moral socialization as well as gender socialization, this thesis discusses the causes that lead to the failure of individual socialization from different aspects as a good way to guide individuals to face the difficulties occurring in these courses with positive attitudes and to help individuals realize the importance of successful socialization in promoting both personal development and social progress. 

　　　 Socialization is the process of transforming a natural person into a social person, which should be accomplished by the interaction of individuals and social environment. This thesis points out the concrete efforts that both society and individuals should make in acquiring successful socialization by concluding intrinsic factors and extrinsic factors that have influential effect on socialization process. Meanwhile relevant solutions are given to help individuals avoid suffering great failure like what Emily had experienced by making the most of favorable external factors to make themselves be well integrated into society.

摘要：福克纳的短篇小说《献给艾米丽的玫瑰》，反映了内战后南方贵族势力的衰落和新旧价值观念的冲突对美国南方社会所造成的影响。小说主人公艾米丽的悲剧一生引发了读者对人与社会关系的思考。

　　　通过对艾米丽法律、道德、性别角色社会化过程的分析，本文探讨了导致个人社会化失败的各方面原因，引导个体积极面对社会化过程中所出现的问题，并帮助个体理解成功社会化对促进个体进步和社会发展所产生的重要意义。

　　　社会化是自然人过渡到社会人的过程，需要通过个体和社会相互作用来完成。本文从内因和外因两个角度分析了社会和个人在两个方面分析了影响个体社会化成败的关键因素并给出了相应的解决方案来帮助帮助个体充分利用有利的外界因素以更好地融入社会，避免像艾米丽那样遭受失败的社会化。

　　　In this short story, Faulkner revealed the sharp conflicts between individuals and the bourgeois society during the period of social transformation. The traditional values and previous political system are greatly challenged after great social changes. Many social contradictions are exposed in this period, which can cause the instability of the new society. People need to find out ways to build up new relationship with the new society and redefine their social roles in order to be well integrated into the new society. In fact, people are always doing such kind of things during their process of socialization. They just need to face more challenges in transitional society.

　　　 Faulkner used the tragedy of Emily to help the readers think about the relationship of man and society after reading this short story. He didn't give readers any feasible solutions, because with different characteristics and concrete conditions people has different ways to deal with this kind of relationship in different ages. The only certainty is that every social members should go through the process of socialization and learning to manage the relationship of man and society is an inevitable thing. Therefore, it is meaningful for individuals to analyze the failure of  socialization by using the knowledge of sociological theory.
